George William Arnold Jr. numbered the many Washington, D.C., residents with Southern sympathies who left the nation’s capital in 1861 and joined the Confederate military. He crossed into Virginia, traveled to Richmond, and joined one of the Confederacy's most critical infrastructure agencies. His brother Sam joined him. Here's the story.
