Toddlers Can Read founder Spencer Russell joined the Houston Chronicle's news columnist, Joy Sewing, for a wide-ranging discussion on Houston's child literacy crisis, as well as how parents can help their kids read.
Spencer Russell is an award-winning teacher and the founder of the popular early childhood literacy program Toddlers Can Read, which currently has over 1.5M followers on Instagram and over 1.1M followers on TikTok. Based in Houston, Russell has won several awards, including the Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award, the Kinder Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Amherst Commitment to Teaching Award. He was also a semi-finalist for the HEB Rising Star Texas Teacher of the Year award.
Joy Sewing is the Chronicle's news columnist, where she writes about critical issues including social justice, education, healthcare and inequity. She previously was the Chronicle’s culture columnist, a role she assumed after leading the paper’s coverage of the murder of George Floyd and how Houston responded. A Houston native and former foster parent, Joy has written extensively about her experiences navigating the child-welfare system and, ultimately, she shared her final adoption story in April 2023.
