The Fond du Lac Police Department is setting the record straight about what really happened to the two people involved in a now-viral video posted to social media Wednesday.
It has hundreds of thousands of views and thousands of comments on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Some viewers are accusing Fond du Lac police of mishandling the altercation.
The video, shot by a Black man, was posted to social media by an influencer who identifies himself as TizzyEnt. He has 7.8 million followers on TikTok.
In the introduction of the video, TizzyEnt says he's trying to help the young Black man out, claiming the Black man was arrested for disorderly conduct after the white man in the video charged at him with a gun.
The video shows the two men continuing to yell at each other in the street. At one point, the white man uses a racial slur.
Viewer comments posted to YouTube in response to the video suggest the Fond du Lac Police Department be investigated for not citing the man with the gun. Police, however, say the video circulating online is incomplete and edited, and the narration associated with it is misleading.
Chief Aaron Goldstein said his department does not condone the behavior or language used by either individual.
Fond du Lac police say both men involved in the incident were arrested -- not just the Black man, as the now-viral video claimed.
Goldstein said the white man was booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail on multiple serious criminal charges. While both men were arrested, it does not appear as if criminal charges have been filed against either man yet.
With the help of comments on the police department's Facebook post, disputing the claims that said the incident happened near Fond du Lac's STEM Academy, FOX 11 was able to match the video and find the location of the incident.
We went door to door along the street, trying to talk with people about that video. No one wanted to comment on camera. We did come across one man who identified himself as the victim, but he told us he had nothing to say.
The Fond du Lac Police Department offered a lengthy Facebook post to explain what they say happened in the incident.
