In the Bagaha stretch of the Gandak River in Bihar, something tiny has happened. But it means everything.
31 gharial hatchlings have just entered the water. And they are not alone. Five active nests are now under close watch by conservation teams.
These are not ordinary crocodiles. Gharials are long-snouted fish eaters, instantly recognised by a bulb-like growth on the snout of adult males. This bulb is called the “ghara”, and that is where their name comes from. More importantly, they are indicators of river health. If they are here, the river is alive.
There was a time when they almost disappeared from this river system. Listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, gharials were pushed to the edge by fishing nets, pollution, sand mining, dams and shrinking habitat.
Today, the picture looks different. The Gandak now supports over 1,000 gharials in total. In 2015, adult numbers were around 54. Now they are over 400. That shift did not happen by chance.
Years of steady work by the Bihar Forest Department and the Wildlife Institute of India helped protect nests, track movement and restore river conditions.
In simple terms, “WHEN THE RIVER BREATHES, THEY RETURN.”
The Gandak is now seen as the second strongest gharial habitat after the Chambal River. And maybe the most important part is this. A healthy river is not just about wildlife. It means better fish, cleaner water and a safer ecosystem for people too.
