18 October 2023, Guangzhou. Rainy day.
Immersive city walk. Route: Shayuan — Kecun — Guangzhou Bridge — Wuyangcun. Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story.

Entering Shayuan Station: the mall basement level brimming with earthly life.
Where do we begin to understand a city? Right here. Shayuan is an interchange between Guangfo Line and Guangzhou Metro Line 8, with massive daily passenger flow. Shayuan Market, Haizhu District's largest produce market, sits just outside. The station's indoor mall carries that same vibe. Grocery shoppers, browsers, commuters—this is everyday Guangzhou.

Kecun: a name with a story.
During the Ming Wanli era, the Li and Yan clans migrated here and founded the village. The name suggests “living as strangers in a foreign land.” Now mostly Wu clan residents. Ancestors probably never imagined that centuries later, “Kecun” would take on new meaning—the first stop for many young newcomers to Guangzhou.
Like Shipai, Kecun once housed文艺 youth who made films and wrote books about this chaotic village. Some stayed, some left. No one knows. Guests come, guests go. Only the kapok tree at Kecun Overpass remains unchanged. Kecun, after all, is Kecun.

Wuyangcun—“cun” written with the archaic character “邨,” originally called “Wuyang New Town.”
Many know it only as a subway stop. But for old Guangzhou residents, Wuyangcun once shone brightly. Construction began in 1984—one of Guangzhou's first commodity housing estates. Modeled after “Hong Kong public housing estate” style, residential blocks connected by arched bridges, the A, B, C, E, H, K compounds linked by elevated platforms. In the 1980s, it was second only to Ersha Island as an upscale residential area.
Wuyangcun was also Guangzhou's first large‑scale commercial housing project. The city's first post‑reform wealthy families bought homes here. Attention shifted east to Zhujiang New Town in the 21st century. But for over thirty years, this land was the pride of its residents—outsiders envied it. Its planning lessons shaped Zhujiang New Town.
In 2018, thirty‑something Wuyangcun was included in Guangzhou's urban renewal scope. A clear announcement: Wuyangcun, old.

Guangzhou on a rainy day—a different kind of beauty.
Rain washes the streets, making them gleam. Pedestrians' umbrellas stand out vividly against the gray sky. People huddled at bus stops, passersby hurrying under umbrellas, delivery riders in raincoats—these scenes, ordinary yet real.
———
Where do we begin to understand a city?
With its metro stations—Shayuan's earthly vibe, Kecun's crowds, Wuyangcun's archaic character.
With its history—Kecun's “stranger” origins, Wuyangcun's three‑decade journey.
With its rainy days—washed streets, umbrella‑shaded figures.
