Australian National University Renewable Energy Group has identified Leigh Creek Brown Coal Open Pit Mine in Northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia as a Brownfield Site for Pumped Hydro Energy Storage, PHES.
The mine was the source of brown coal for the Port Augusta Electricity Stations owned by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) starting in 1946. ETSA was a vertically integrated enterprise that produced and sold electric in South Australia.
The coal mine ceased production in 2015, leaving a year's supply of coal in a stockpile. The Port Augusta coal-fired power station, also known as the Northern Power Station, ceased electricity production on May 9, 2016
AEMO's 12-month analysis of the Fuel Mix for electricity production in S.A. shows Wind Generation and Natural Gas Power Generation are the only reliable sources of electricity.
There is therefore a deficiency in backup systems in the S.A. market and a reliance on electricity being imported from the Eastern States via 2 interconnectors. These interconnectors that are frequently at 100% utilization in the evenings, the period of highest demand for electricity.
South Australia requires 150 GWh of stored energy: That is the peak amount of electricity currently provided via Natural Gas.
The terrain and the presence of deep pits makes Leigh Creek an ideal site for this kind of large-scale energy storage via PHES.
