STORYLINE
Israeli forces on Thursday continued their offensive in southern Lebanon, an operation Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said is aimed at establishing a two-kilometre (1.2-mile) wide zone in south Lebanon that will be free of Hezbollah guerrillas - ruling out a larger occupation.
After nine soldiers were killed in a single day of fighting against Hezbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon, the Israeli government is coming under growing criticism at home.
Along with the nine dead, 22 soldiers were wounded in bloody battles in the south Lebanon stronghold of Bint Jbail on Wednesday alone _ while the army has been unable to stop the rocket barrages on northern Israel that have killed 18 civilians in 15 days.
An Israeli airstrike that killed four UN peacekeepers in Lebanon and plans for a new 2-kilometer buffer zone have also rekindled fears of a return
to Israel's messy 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon, which ended in 2000 after the Israeli public grew exhausted with the mounting death toll there.
After Hezbollah guerrillas crossed the border July 12th, killing three soldiers and capturing two others, there was near wall-to-wall political
support for the government's decision to launch a large-scale offensive to crush the militant group.
But that consensus is beginning to crack, and critics are starting to say the government launched the offensive hastily, with no exit strategy, and many fearing the country is again being dragged into yet another quagmire across its northern border with seemingly no historical lessons learned.
