Jeans Santana, MD, is an anesthesiologist who specializes in managing patients who are undergoing cardiac procedures, including open heart surgery and electrophysiology studies. Additionally, Dr. Santana works with patients who need anesthesia for procedures such as abdominal surgery, gallbladder removal, and appendectomy. Most of Dr. Santana’s patients have multiple medical issues such as heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease. “I like the challenge of my work and how it makes me slow down every single day,” he says. “Every patient has their own story, their own sensitivities, and their own history. I think cautiously about which anesthetics I'm going to use to make my patients go to sleep comfortably and safely.” Dr. Santana values the importance of putting patients at ease before giving them anesthesia. “I know how it can be difficult for patients to meet someone on the morning or the afternoon of their surgery. They feel vulnerable, and I get that,” he says. “I try to get my patients to understand that they are in good hands, and they have someone in front of them who has been providing anesthesia services for a number of years, who is certified, and has gone through rigorous training.” His goal, he says, is to build trust and reduce anxiety.
