This early 1940s silent film "New York City" was produced by Walter O. Cutlohn Inc., a leading film distributor, and gives viewers an insight into the diversity of New York City. It focuses mainly on architecture and covers impressive buildings across the city. It then looks at some of the services provided, like markets and different medical centers. It also focuses on new projects in the city, such as houses from the Queensbridge Housing Project, completed in 1939. The film shows most sites in detail and from different angles. It also shows excellent color footage of streets in New York, giving insight into life at the time. Catalog description: "Views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the skyline of New York.We see the Stock Exchange and Wall Street, the lower East side with its large Jewish population, the Bowery and Chinatown. From there we go to some of the sky-scrapers including the Empire State and the Chrysler buildings. Aerial views of Times Square and the Public Library, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue plus a visit to Riverside Drive, Grant's Tomb and other spots of interest conclude the reel."
