Lecture by Sandora Fabian: "How should small states defend themselves?" organized by the Center for Security and Strategic Research, November 5, 2015.
LTC Sandor Fabian is a Special Forces officer in the Hungarian Army who currently holds position at the NATO Special Operations Headquarters. He has written master thesis “Professional Irregular Defense Forces: the Other Side of the COIN” at Naval Postgraduate School, US in 2012 and is an author of the book “Irregular Warfare the Future Military Strategy for Small States” (2015).
The guest lecture covers four traditional concepts used by small states to ensure their survival (imitating major powers, joining alliances, assuming neutrality, acquiring weapons of mass destruction), introduces the idea of pursuing the notion of difference instead of the notion of sameness in international competitions and describe the theory of indirect strategy and reccomends small states to base their national defence strategies on irregular warfare.
