Arriving at summit of European Union leaders in Brussels on Thursday (December 13), Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that EU27 heads of government were keen to give British Prime Minister Theresa May the clarifications needed to get the withdrawal agreement ratified in Westminster, but that reopening it for negotiation would not be possible.
Varadkar said that in a bilateral meeting he had with May earlier in the day, she raised some suggestions that "made sense" and others that seemed less realistic. He said he emphasised that the deal is not open for renegotiation, as a backstop is necessary for both Ireland and the EU as a whole.
May will meet the EU leaders to discuss Brexit later on Thursday, less than 24 hours after she survived a no confidence vote among Conservative lawmakers in London, when critics of her plan tried to bring her down.
