The Industrial Revolution, which began in England in the mid-18th century, was marked by the invention of Thomas Newcomen's steam engine in 1712 for pumping water out of mines, and its improvement by James Watt in the 1760s, which allowed for the mechanization of production. Over a century (approximately 1750–1850), society transitioned from manual labor and an agrarian economy to factory production: textile machines appeared (the spinning jenny in 1764), as did George Stephenson's steam locomotives (1825), railways, and electricity (although its full implementation occurred in the 19th century), radically changing transportation, urbanization, and global trade. This led to the growth of cities, the exploitation of labor, but also to innovation, laying the foundations of capitalism and the modern world.
