Since their first appearance in 1961, the Fantastic Four have been portrayed as a conflicted yet strong family. Over the decades, its members have clashed with both extraterrestrial entities and each other over the revelation of their anonymity in favor of fame and public popularity. Among their eternal adversaries and allies, the most famous are: Doctor Doom, the team's sworn enemy and the despotic ruler of the state of Latveria, the devourer of worlds Galactus, a representative of the Kree race, the cruel tyrant Ronan the Accuser, the ruler of the Negative Zone Annihilus, the prince of Atlantis Namor, the space nomad Silver Surfer, the ruler of Subterranea Mole Man, as well as the shapeshifting empire of the Skrulls.
Galactus was once a humanoid named Galan from the planet Taa, whose civilization was the most advanced in the universe that preceded ours. This universe arose and developed according to the Big Bang theory and was going through a period of compression just during Galan's lifetime. Taa remained one of the last living planets. Galan was a space explorer and went on an expedition to find a way to save his planet, but his search was unsuccessful. In the end, radiation destroyed almost all life in the universe. Several Taanans survived, but their death was inevitable. Galan offered them a "beautiful death" - to fly in a spaceship straight to the center of the contracting universe - to the "cosmic egg". When the ship reached its destination, everyone died except Galan, who unexpectedly found himself filled with new energy. The consciousness of the dying universe contacted him, telling him that he would die, but would be reborn and become Galactus - the devourer of worlds. After this, Galan was absorbed by the cosmic egg.
