So many cellists have been taught when they started to form their left hand in form of a lovely orange - in fact I was told that too! (Different names of the "orange" can be "an arch" or a "nice arch" (in German it can be an apple - wie ein Apfel oder auch "wie ein Gewölbe").
By getting older I observed that my colleagues still playing according to this lovely image have developed difficulties - difficulties playing at all and particularly playing in tune.
This video explains the mistakes of a cumbersome and unhealthy technique introduced in order to offer something easy to remember, particularly for children.
Content:
0:00 min - the orange
1:24 min - bent knuckles?
2:05 min - fingers at right angle to the fingerboard? - fingers on the tip?
3:17 min - slanting hand
4:19 min - arm up high?
5:07 min - pencil test
7:55 min - touching the upper string
8:58 min - thumb bent?
10:53 min - A healthy comfortable posture
11:33 min - cello neck position
12:33 min - how to successfully change postures
