This is a ridiculous design choice. The actuator that pulls the trunk close can make it so you can't really use your car for anything.
Our cinch actuator just failed. The only notification for this is when you press a trunk button, you get 3 beeps and nothing happens. The car things the trunk is still open.
Now, it's annoying that we can't get into our trunk (from the outside), but that's not really the issue. Things fail, and sometimes it means you have to wait to get it fixed.
However, because the car thinks the liftgate is open (the one you can't open or get into), it will not let me lock the car. I'll repeat that. Because you can't open the trunk, you cannot lock a $100k car.
Which—despite the comments I'm sure I'll get below saying I'm overreacting—means my car is mostly unusable. I can't safely drive somewhere (like the grocery store or whatever), because there's no way to lock the car while your there.
