In legends Mara Jade was a force sensitive human female who took on many different roles throughout her life. Beginning as the personal assassin to Emperor Palpatine, she served as the Emperor’s Hand, but her employment ended with the death of her master. She eventually became a smuggler and eventually crossed paths with Luke Skywalker several times. By 19 ABY during a mission to Nirauan, both force users fell in love and from there Mara Jade took on the surname Skywalker and became a part of the New Jedi Order. As every fan of Mara Jade knows, she is a strong and convincing character in her own right. With a strong combat prowess and the smarts to basically survive most things, it's no wonder that Mara Jade has such a devoted fan base in legends.
But beyond being a compelling character, what else is it that makes Mara Jade so important and what can this character bring to the wider Star Wars universe if she was canonised in some shape or form?
Should Mara Jade return to the current canon universe, I believe it will add plenty to the wider lore of the canon universe and specifically make Luke Skywalker’s New Jedi Order much more interesting. Currently, based on what we see in canon about Luke Skywalker’s New Jedi Order, there really isn’t much that distinguishes it or at the very least makes it unique from the Jedi order during the prequel era.
As far as I can tell, there really aren't any major significant changes from the prequel jedi order in terms of how Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Order operates and interprets the jedi philosophy. Currently, all we get is Luke is the head of a new jedi order, and he was training a new generation of jedi before it all comes crashing down and destroyed by Snoke and Ben Solo. As Luke’s jedi order is being described there really isn’t anything special and while Luke does acknowledge that the jedi order during the prequel era was wrong, there isn’t really much to show in terms of what Luke was doing differently.
This is where a character like Mara Jade really comes into play. You see the relationship between Luke and Mara, that being one of attachments and love would definitely have been disallowed during the prequel era. As we all know, the jedis of the prequel era were far more dogmatic and rigid in their interpretation of the jedi philosophy. Therefore, by allowing relationships and attachments in Luke’s New Jedi Order, it will create some distinction and move away from the prequel jedi order.
But this is not to say that we should create a distinction between these two jedi orders for the sake of being different. There is actually a deep seated reasoning behind why this difference should occur and how it can be justified. In fact, this difference builds on what Luke learns as a character and what he demonstrates during the original trilogy.
There are two instances in which Luke differs from the older jedis such as Master Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi. Despite the advice of Master Yoda and Obi Wan for Luke to forgo all attachments in order to become a Jedi, Luke uses these feelings to guide his actions, at least more so than the two jedi masters. We see this when Luke decides to quit his training early on Dagobah after sensing that his friends were in danger on Cloud City. Despite the warnings of Master Yoda who asks Luke to continue to train and refrain from helping his friends, believing him not to be ready for the trials ahead, Luke goes anyway. The second time we see this is when Yoda and Obi Wan call for Luke to defeat Vader, despite Luke believing that he could turn Darth Vader away from the dark side of the force. Here we see it clearly, the difference between the jedis of the prequel era and the new generation of jedi. Luke through his attachments with Vader as his father believes that the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker continues to live on behind the suit of cybernetics. And believing that redemption is possible, Luke goes against the advice of Yoda and Obi Wan and holds on to his attachments to Vader as his father.
Which is why it makes perfect sense that Luke develops a Jedi Order that does not openly shun attachments to the extreme lengths of the prequel jedi. Instead for Luke’s Jedi Order, attachments should not be outlawed as they were not in legends continuity. Luke’s marriage and relationship with Mara Jade symbolises this progression away from the interpretations of the prequel jedi order and ventures into something new that is distinct from all that has come before. And that is why Mara Jade should be canon.
