The 1953 flood caused over £1.5 billion in damage (today's money), destroyed 24,000 homes, rendered 160,000 acres of farmland unusable, and forced Britain to build the flood defense systems we rely on today—including the Thames Barrier, sophisticated warning systems, and strengthened coastal defenses that have since saved countless lives and prevented an estimated £100 billion in damage.
