The Mannich reaction is an analogue of the aldol reaction that uses an iminium ion electrophile instead of a ketone or aldehyde. Here we examine the mechanism of the Mannich reaction and its application to a couple of reactions that involve acetal hydrolysis followed by Mannich addition.
