The Dubai Canal is being filled with water.
The 2 billion-dirham project aims to connect the Dubai Creek all the way to the Persian Gulf.

STORY-LINE:
Water has been released into Dubai Canal, a 2 billion-dirham (545 million US dollars) project that will turn part of the emirate into an island.
The 2.9 kilometre (1.8 miles) canal will connect Business Bay to the Persian Gulf - it means water will flow all the way from the Dubai Creek into the ocean.
The project will include hotels, a mall, new residential areas and private marinas for boats. Authorities in the UAE are hoping the canal will turn Dubai into a trading hub.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is building bridges and pedestrian crossings over the canal on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road, and Jumeirah Beach Road.
The bridges will be more than eight metres (26.2 feet) above water to allow for boats to pass.
The RTA is hoping the project will boost their marine transport system - 18 stations will be built along the Dubai Creek and the canal.
Earlier this year, the RTA announced the project will be completed by the end of 2016
