From the start of the Civil War through early 1864, Confederates were able to maintain control of The Shenandoah Valley, a vital lifeline for being able to feed and supply their armies. Multiple Union forces had tried to take control of the region, but failed. Determined to put an end to the Southern War Effort, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant took his first stab and controlling the region by sending Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan out on what is now known as the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864. Opposing Sheridan was Confederate General Jubal Early.
Garry Adelman, Sarah Kay Bierle and Andy Poulton of the American Battlefield Trust give an overview of the campaign.
