Between the Civil War and World War I military technology changed rapidly, leading to innovative and sometimes weird weapons. Here are 5 of the most influential and important developments in battle rifles from the transitional period, including the Remington Rolling Block (Egyptian and Spanish models), the Martini-Henry, the m1874 Gras, the m1871/88 Beaumont-Vitali, and the m1871/84 Mauser rifle.
These rifles were developed for black powder, using early centerfire cartridge designs; the bullets are huge by modern standards, but low velocity, most similar to a 45/70, which itself is a cartridge from those days.
All shooting was done safely, on private ranges with secure backdrops. These are antique rifles for which ammunition is not commercially available, and not all the weapons or ammunition is still reliable.
