Today we celebrate the memory of Saint Toribio Romo González, a Mexican priest and martyr of the Cristero War. At only 27 years old, this young priest faced religious persecution in Mexico with courage and unwavering faith. Ordained in 1922, he dedicated himself with zeal to pastoral ministry, catechesis, and the celebration of the Eucharist, even in hiding. When he learned he was being sought by soldiers, he could have fled, but chose to stay so as not to abandon his faithful. In the early morning of February 25, 1928, he was executed without trial, exclaiming: "I die, but God does not die. Long live Christ the King!" His last words echo to this day as a testament of heroic faith.
Saint Toribio quickly became a beloved saint among the people, especially among migrants crossing the border in search of a better life. Countless faithful report graces received through his intercession, including miraculous appearances in the desert. May this young martyr inspire us to live our faith with courage, even in the face of great difficulties.
Saint Toribio Romo, pray for us!
