Consonants articulated without participation of the vocal cords are called voiceless because they are produced just with the release of air. The articulatory organs: lips, tongue and glottis play an important role in how this release air sounds.
Consonants articulated with the vibration of the vocal cords are called voiced. They are produced with the release of air plus the vibration of the vocal cords. Their different sounds depend on the position of the articulatory organs.
