A Ukrainian group called Wild Hornets has been producing cheap, fast interceptor drones designed to shoot down Iranian-made Shahed drones, which Russia has widely used in the Ukraine war.
These interceptor drones must be launched quickly and positioned near the incoming drone’s flight path so they can catch up and destroy it.
The technology reflects the rapid evolution of drone warfare, where new weapons are quickly met with counter-measures—similar to earlier developments like fiber-optic drones that initially resisted electronic jamming.
The United States is reportedly seeking Ukraine’s help using this counter-drone technology against Iranian drones.
In return, Ukraine wants more Patriot PAC-2 and PAC-3 interceptor missiles, which are effective against some drones and missiles but are currently in short supply due to heavy use in Ukraine.
Experts say Ukraine’s interceptor drones could help somewhat, but production is only about 100 per day and Ukraine needs most of them for its own defense against large Russian drone attacks (sometimes 500–600 drones at once).
Because of limited numbers and Iran’s large territory, the drones are unlikely to significantly change the overall balance of the conflict.
