"Lateralus" from Tool's "Lateralus" album (2001).
Lateralus... There is a lot to say about this cover. I will make another big list of points like I did with the Stinkfist video. But yeah, this version is different from Coversolution's video and I'll explain why.
-The first big riff of the song, the main Lateralus riff. I listened to it a million times, slowed it down, pulled the song apart, etc. I'm convinced that he plays the 5th fret 3 times, and then switches to the 3rd fret. I know that ending the riff in the 7/8 bar (bar 27) is much easier when you just switch to the A string. However, doing the slide makes completing the riff much more rewarding. Justin usually doesn't do the slide, it's true. And I always want the tab to be accurate but I personally think this is how it should've been + you also join Adam with his slide to 10-12.
-At 2:45, you can see me struggling. The bass strap got caught somewhere and it took a solid 20 seconds to get out of that chokehold.
-Bar 84, the infamous fretless part. No Justin never played fretless on Intension, it was only the 2nd verse of Lateralus that was recorded on a fretless. And he admitted himself that he wasn't very good at it so he only did that little part. My fretless, however, doesn't sound very good with a pick so the tone is obviously not similar to the other tone. I'm sure nobody will ever do this with a fretless when it comes to a live situation.
-At 4:40, we turn on Flanger! This is something I didn't see in CS's video but Justin DEFINITELY used Flanger.
-Bar 199 and Bar 200 are REALLY fun to play.
-7:04, the whammy part. I hope you're happy seeing me wear these fluffy socks cause it's a bit silly to see all those comments about my feet. Yes, I have some awful feet, but I thought we were all manly Gondorian men who don't get nauseous after seeing a bare foot! You love seeing half-naked Maynard on stage but you command me to wear shoes in my own house, come on man.
Oh yeah, you'll need some overdrive and a bass whammy for this part. I couldn't get the tone right because you need a very specific drive pedal. We leave it on because there is another whammy note at 8:02. After that, leave the effects on for the big chords ending.
-Enjoy!
