Last weekend I picked up this, pretty awesome, new bike. It’s a 1993 KHS Team Montana and it appears to be completely original! I saw it listed on eBay, in a pretty vague advert but after looking through the photos I realised how well spec’d it was. The only real problem I could see was the rear shifter had been removed and replaced with a grip shift.
I ended up winning the auction, but instead of just driving 90 minutes or so to pick up a bike, I thought I’d visit a local trail too. Hopton Wood looked to be the most local but one of the reviews said it was probably best for a full suspension bike… Nah – I’ll be fine.
The bike was actually in really good condition. I changed the saddle, pumped up the tyres, adjusted the breaks and greased the chain and off I went. I had planned on swapping out all the cables while I was there but seeing as it worked…. I just wanted to ride.
Note: I know the video shows a trigger shifter in it. It’s from an early Deore shifter that I had spare. I’ve now found a proper shifter to match which means the service video will be slightly delayed while I wait for that…
The bike rode well. I was a bit afraid at first, riding a new trail with a rigid bike but I got used to it and started easing off the brakes. The trail was around 10 miles long and involved almost 2000ft of climbing! Uphill dragged but the downhills were really nice. A good mixture of trails and terrain!
All in all, a good buy and a good day out!
