The cocoon construction by a silkworm involves several stages, typically over two to three days:
1.Spinning Silk : Once the silkworm reaches the mature larval stage, it secretes a fluid silk protein from its silk glands. This fluid hardens when exposed to air, forming silk threads.
2. Forming the Cocoon : The silkworm attaches these silk threads to a surface and begins spinning a continuous thread around itself. It uses figure-eight movements of its head to form the cocoon, which is made of a single, long, unbroken silk fiber.
3. Complete Cocoon : After about two to three days, the silkworm completes the construction, fully enclosing itself inside the cocoon. This cocoon serves as a protective covering as the silkworm undergoes metamorphosis, transforming into a moth.
Once the process is complete, the cocoon provides a source of raw silk, which is harvested in silk production.
