Coastlines are dynamic natural environments in a state of constant flux determined by tides, the weather and erosion and deposition. Settled by humankind attracted by the resources and opportunities they offer for millennia, they are also shaped by industry, trade and leisure activity.
Phil Maudsley, Headteacher, will illustrate how his school makes extensive use of the local beach, including an innovative ‘cabinets of curiosity’ approach. We will also explore ideas for ‘virtual fieldwork’ for schools located far from the coast.
Anthony Barlow, University of Roehampton will support understanding of the potential of using online tools to “take the children there”, even when you and your children might be up to 70 miles from the coast. Did you know that is the furthest distance your school can be from the coast in the UK?
