Den Fynske Landsby (The Funen Village) is an open-air museum in Odense that recreates everyday life in rural Denmark from the 17th to the 19th century. In this video, we take a closer look at how a small Danish village functioned before industrialisation, based on preserved buildings, historical records, and material culture.
The village consists of original farmhouses, workshops, and outbuildings that were relocated from across Funen and reconstructed on site. Each building reflects regional construction methods, social structure, and living conditions from different periods in Danish history. The focus is not on nobility or grand architecture, but on ordinary people and daily life.
The video explores traditional timber framing, thatched roofs, interior layouts, and how homes were adapted to farming, seasonal work, and family life. It also touches on crafts, agriculture, and how rural communities were organised before modern infrastructure, electricity, and mechanised farming.
Den Fynske Landsby provides a rare opportunity to see how historical environments were shaped by function rather than decoration. Everything from house size to placement reflects practical needs, climate, and available resources. This makes it a valuable reference for understanding pre-modern Danish society and rural life.
The video is based on visual documentation from the site and aims to present the village as a historical reconstruction rather than a romanticised version of the past.
