Now, you’re probably thinking to yourself, Ben, why are you doing a review on a discontinued ball? Well, the Black Widow Legend has been one of the greatest selling balls here at Bowlers Paradise for a reason. The combination of the tried, tested and true GasMask core with the NBT Hybrid reactive coverstock is one of the best pairings brought together by Hammer and has given many their best performance on the lanes, especially on house conditions.

Hybrid coverstocks have rarely been used in the black widow line, so I was excited to get this piece in my hands. I have always been a fan of unique releases as it feels like I have an immediate leg up on their competition as with shapes that are difficult to come by. Backing that preference up with one of the most proven cores ever was sure to be great off my hand.

And on the lanes, the Legend’s unique shape shined through almost immediately. On this house pattern, the times that I delivered the ball the right way, there was absolutely zero doubt I would strike, unless I 9 pinned because of the ridiculous continuation provided by this piece. Pins exploded, spun and swished all over the deck as long as I did one thing right.

Which leads me to the most interesting observation about this piece. The less axis rotation I used, the better. The more I simply rolled the ball off my hand, the better. This is extremely uncommon for me with any ball from any manufacturer at any performance level. Almost always, I have to move inside and increase my axis rotation on house conditions to make sure the ball I am throwing doesn’t hit friction too early or roll out. The more I moved inside and tried that common trick, the worse my ball reaction got.

But even through some transition, returning to what worked continued to knock all ten over. I was able to adjust my ball speed as I moved around the lane and saw no issues in performance until getting all the way into 5th arrow, as long as I did the right thing with my hand position.

So with that, who do I think this piece would work well with? Well, I really believe that the traditional tweener type of bowler was the intended target for the Black Widow Legend. Those that have a limited amount of axis rotation and a medium rev rate have traditionally done great with the Widow line, and giving them this hybrid option brings together the best of both worlds, allowing them to play in the part of the lane they’re most comfortable.

Lower rev rate players that struggle to get the ball to the pocket later in their league play will also appreciate what they will see out of the Black Widow Legend. This coverstock is strong enough to be used on fresh conditions, and the heavy roll provided by the Gas Mask core will maintain their carry percentage as the night goes on and they have to move to the inside part of the lane.

Lastly, sport bowlers will love the shape the Black Widow Legend gives them on medium volume oil patterns, especially those longer than 40’. If you’re able to get this piece to have an even hook phase and to use it’s natural pop off the end of a pattern on tougher conditions, you’re sure to see yourself in the pocket more often, and to increase your carry percentage when the rest of the field struggles to get the corners out.

Although there have been many iterations of pieces in the Black Widow line from Hammer, the performance of this piece fulfills the expectations of the “Legend” name is bears.
