Lasers can be used to weld fabrics. The process is fast, and leaves the outer surfaces of the fabrics unaffected. No additional adhesive is necessary, because the fabric surfaces are melted to make the joint. Recent work has led to the development of a laser sewing machine. The fabrics sometimes need to be prepared with laser absorber in advance, and are handled manually through the machine like a conventional sewing machine. In other, more mechanised systems, the laser is moved over pre-placed fabric pieces, creating a 2D or 3D joint line.
