How to Give a Horse an Injection | LanaZavada

As most of you know I give injections to my horses by myself and also help others at my stable if they ask me.
And here is our detailed tutorial on how to do such injections. It’s very important to have these skills because sometimes there’s nobody to help and the horse should get an immediate first aid before your vet arrives.

Some medicine is only for intramuscular and some is for intravenous injection so it’s crucial to know how to perform each of them.

INTRAMUSCULAR
I start with a simpler injection which is an intramuscular one. I give it to Blacky, it’s with homeopathic remedies for his arthritis.
You should imagine a triangle on a horse’s neck and shot right at 90 degree angle right in the centre. This way you are in the best possible place for making less invasion. Make sure you haven’t touched any vessels by pulling on the syringe a little and seeing NO blood. This can also be felt when you already know how easily you can inject the medicine and if next time you feel something is restricting you - it’s most likely you got into a vessel.

INTRAVENOUS
Intravenous injections need to be performed with almost no angle to the vein, you should get INTO it rather than THROUGH it. Try to follow it. You should do it in the middle of the neck, not too high and not too low because there’s a carotid closer to the chest/shoulders area and you have to avoid it.
If your medicine is cold, pull more blood into the syringe, in so doing you warm the medicine up. Always check you have no air in the syringe and don’t push it all the way when you finish, so no bubbles get into the blood.

HOW TO DEAL WITH WORRIED HORSES
If your horse doesn’t stand still, you can use some additional tools to hold it. I use a chain for Oasis to make sure I have some control and lower the risk of an injury.
First Oasis remembered his trick of shaking his head so I had to give the rope to my assistant to have an opportunity to scratch his neck instead and distract him from shaking haha
He also likes when I tell him he’s a good boy and he tries to do his best to get a compliment hehe
Don’t forget to give some treat to your horses after they did great! Thus they’ll know for sure what they’re asked to do.
