Volumetric strain is the ratio of a body's change in volume to its original volume and is derived by considering strains in three perpendicular directions (x, y, z).
For a homogeneous, isotropic material under stress, the volumetric strain can be expressed as the sum of the axial strains in each direction, minus twice the product of Poisson's ratio and the sum of the other two axial strains
