When the Red Army crossed into East Prussia in October 1944, German forces briefly retook the village of Nemmersdorf. What they found there did more than shock the front; it rewired it. The discovery, and how it was weaponised, transformed fear into policy and survival into ideology. From that point on, the Eastern Front ceased to function as a conventional battlefield.
