King Milinda asked Arahant Nagasena, "Lord Nagasena, did the Blessed One say that there is no escape from death in the sky, the sea, or in the mountains? Yet, the Blessed One also spoke of Pirith, Dhajagga Pirith, Aataanaatiya Pirith, and Angulimala Pirith. How can these statements be reconciled?"

Arahant Nagasena responded, "Your Majesty, the Blessed One did indeed make both statements. The Pirith is for those who are alive and not burdened by evil deeds. For someone whose life has ended, no action or strategy can save them. Watering a dead tree is futile, just as water is useless for a parched crop. However, young crops thrive with water, just as living beings can benefit from the Pirith. But once a person has passed away, Pirith cannot bring them back. Nonetheless, some people, whether young or old, thrive due to the medicinal power of the Pirith."

The first benefit of chanting Pirith is that it brings good fortune to the chanter. The Milinda question states: "Your Majesty, during the Pirith sermons, ailments are cured. The tongue may dry, the mind may wander, the throat may tighten, but all illnesses are healed, and all dangers are averted while holding their Pirith." It seems that those who chant and listen to Pirith receive blessings. The descriptions of dry throat and tongue suggest that the practice of repeating Pirith seven times, twenty-one times, one hundred and eight times, or even a thousand times, might have developed later.

Chanting spells has historically performed many miracles, such as neutralizing snake venom and dispelling storms. These miraculous effects stem from the blessed Arahant Samma Sambuddha, our Master, whose words, delivered by the Arahants, carry the wisdom of Enlightenment and have the power to shake the world's relics. The Rathana Sutta, for instance, was recited by the Blessed One himself for the protection of the Pirith disciple.

Arahant Nagasena recounted several miracles performed during the chanting of Pirith: "Your Majesty, when protected by the Pirith, a serpent intending to bite does not strike. Its open mouth closes. Thieves drop their clubs and approach with love. An angry elephant stops in its tracks. Even a blazing fire halts. Poisoned food becomes harmless. Assailants turn into protectors. Even traps laid for the unwary fail to catch their victims." This account comes from Arahant Nagasena, a revered theologian.

Therefore, enlighten your mind and frequently seek the protection of Pirith with faith in the words of the Lord Buddha! Recite the Rathana Sutta, Karaniya Metta Sutta, Mora Piritha, Khandha Piritha, Dhajagga Piritha, Angulimala Piritha, and Aataanaatiya Piritha.
