Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around 25 miles north of Nottingham, is the town of Worksop.
A settlement has existed in Worksop since at least Norman times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Werchesope'. The name comes from 'Weorc', an Old English person's name, and 'hop', meaning valley or enclosure.
Geographically Worksop is situated on the River Ryton at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire at the northern end of the county. In 1296 it was granted a town charter during the reign of Edward I.
In 1777 the Chesterfield Canal opened, which passed through Worksop. This paved the way for growth in the town as industries emerged. Worksop's economy at this time mostly revolved around agriculture. The town was to be transformed with the discovery of coal in the area. The first coal mine was Shireoaks Colliery, which opened in 1859. The mining industry would provide employment to Worksop up until the 1990s when the pits eventually closed.
Today Worksop's economy revolves mostly around the service industry. It is situated roughly between Nottingham, Sheffield and Lincoln, making it practical for commuting purposes for those employed outside of the town.
Famous people from Worksop include football manager Graham Taylor, musician John Parr and golfer Lee Westwood.
