The Housing Act of 1949 funded disastrous public housing experiments that had long-term effects on urban neighborhoods
In St. Louis, federal money contributed to the infamous Pruitt-Igoe project, a utopian development that became obsolete as soon as it was built. With no money left over for adequate maintenance and repair, the project soon turned from a gleaming example of federal largesse to a nightmare of poverty, crime, and despair.
The project was designed by famed architect Minoru Yamasaki. Yamasaki in turn was heavily influenced by the modernist Le Corbusier, who believed homes should be "machines for living."
In 1976, a mere 22 years after they were built, the last of the 33 multistory buildings were intentionally demolished in clouds of dynamite and dust. Once housing 10,000 residents, the site is now mostly weeds, trees, and trash.
This is the story of Pruitt-Igoe.
