A repeat performance of highlights from New Zealand speakers at ASPG’s annual conference hosted by the Queensland Parliament in July 2018, with the theme of Trust in Parliament in a Post-Truth World.
Presentations:
Rt Hon Trevor Mallard - 'Clear and Proactive Communications: how parliaments can build trust'
Colin James - 'The Madness of Crowds vs the Wisdom of Crowds'
Greg Cotmore - 'Effective or Affectation: televising parliamentary proceedings and its influence on MPs' behaviour'
Over the past few years the long-term trend of declining trust in government institutions, business, the media, political parties, and politicians has dominated the news cycle. This trend raises questions as to the authenticity and legitimacy of the institution of parliament. The conference sought to challenge the dominant understandings of trust in our parliaments and explore the relationships, the tensions, and the possibilities for transformation for parliaments and politicians alike.
