'The Way It Is' is the classic song from the 1986 debut album of the same name by Bruce Hornsby & The Range which became a multi-platinum global hit and earned the band a Grammy for Best New Artist.

I first heard this song in my mid-teens (many moons ago!) and it immediately inspired me to diverge from my classical piano training and embark on a project to train my ear so I could transcribe Bruce Hornsby's brilliant piano solos. Endless hours were spent with my piano and a cassette deck (we're talking the 80s here - and yes, I didn't have a life!) to painstakingly reconstruct both solos - I couldn't find any sheet music for the song and there were no YouTube tutorials back then, so it all had to be done by careful listening, over and over again!

Since then, I've played the song countless times live over the years with various bands and have finally distilled those many hours of effort into this carefully crafted backing track. I hope you think the results are worth it.

Footnote - the only thing I didn't much care for in the original song was the rather monotonous, unchanging drum loop that is used throughout. I've added some fills and embellishments that hopefully add interest to the drum part whilst staying faithful to the original recording.
