TRENTON, Ohio (WKRC) - The explosions on a Butler County range are used as teaching tools from smaller ones to larger explosions that mirror real life devastation. The “Post-Blast Program” is a partnership to educate law enforcement, farm technicians, and firefighters from all over the region.
Specialist Mike Grimes is the commander for the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. “We have Dayton PD bomb squad, they came down. We have ATF counterparts, FBI counterparts,” Grimes said.
Participants complete 40 hours of class time and work in the field. The “Post-Blast Program” has been going on for roughly 10 years in the region.
Sheriff Jim Neil of Hamilton County said, “It’s about keeping the public as safe as we can. We are not always going to be there to prevent a bombing, but we will be there to investigate it and reconstruct what happened and find the answers and bring the people who caused it to justice.“
Neil served as commander of the Hamilton County Bomb Squad before becoming sheriff. He said it’s important that everyone in the field stays current with the training to be prepared for a critical incident.
“Arson is, by way of fire and or explosion, and so we are covering the explosive side of the training,” Neil explained.
In addition to other training, the people who come work on post-blast investigation. They look at incidents of explosion and try to determine what caused it.
The training also includes learning about every day household items and chemicals that a criminal can use to create an explosion.
The program helps investigators be the best at their jobs and they are more likely to catch criminals planning to hurt others with explosives.
