Kenzo Mizoguchi's 1954 movie "Sansho the Bailiff" is one of the most lauded of all Japanese movies. Why? The story, cinematography, depth of emotion, and archetypal characters and scenarios. All are factors, but what else?

This video reviews Sansho the Bailiff, and analyzes the movie for its special moments. One of those is the ending. The video dissects the ending of Mizoguchi's Sansho the Bailiff, asking why it takes place on the beach, why the camera moves back to the left, and why a commoner appeals in the final shot.
