Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Marxist Sri Lankan leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, was declared the winner of the presidential elections after two rounds of vote counts on September 22. Dissanayake defeated opposition leader Sajith Premadasa in the historic second round of vote counting, approved by the Sri Lankan Election Commission. The 55-year-old will succeed incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the ninth Executive President of Sri Lanka. According to the Sri Lankan Election Commission, Dissanayake won the presidency with 42.31 per cent votes. The JVP leader has vowed to reform the government and dissolve the parliament within 45 days of assuming power to form an NPP-led government. Watch our video for more.
