As a child, Dyson recalls vacuums that never picked up debris very well. Years later when painting the Ballbarrow, he used a huge spray plant with a cloth screen. This method wasted a lot of powder, so he set about making a cyclone to catch it.
The combination of both ideas provided the catalyst for Dyson's most famous invention – one which he'd place a cyclone in the heart of a vacuum cleaner. He made over 5000 models, every day developing and failing in equal measure.
