A plumbing air vent, also known as a plumbing vent pipe, is an essential component of plumbing systems in buildings. Its main purpose is to maintain proper air pressure within the plumbing system, preventing issues like siphoning of water from traps, sewer gas buildup, and inefficient drainage. These vents ensure that water flows smoothly by equalizing pressure, maintaining water seals in plumbing traps to prevent sewer gas entry, and allowing harmful gasses to escape safely into the atmosphere.
While plumbing air vents perform admirably in milder and warmer climates, they face significant challenges in Arctic regions like Alaska, where heavy snowfall and extreme cold can lead to the formation of snow and ice blockages within air vents, hindering proper airflow within homes.
Our air vent prototype and concept utilizes a fan-based heating system that pulls warm air from within the vents of a home and pull it out to melt ice and snow blockages. Fan activation is based on specific conditions derived from gathered data, ensuring that the system effectively prevents the accumulation of snow and ice, while being energy efficient, only turning on during extreme weather conditions.
