EBITDA — Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization — is one of the most frequently used metrics in business valuation and financial analysis. Because it removes financing costs and non-cash expenses, EBITDA is often used as a proxy for operating performance and for comparing firms with different capital structures. It is commonly referenced in takeover multiples and leveraged buyouts.
However, EBITDA is not the same as cash flow. It excludes ongoing capital investments and working capital needs — an important limitation investors must understand.
