Welcome to this week's episode of "In the Hoods"!
This week we're going to talk about Murray Hill with a little bit of Tudor City thrown in there. Murray hill is a neighborhood that extends from about 34th street to the south of the east river to the east fifth avenue to the west and 42nd street to the north.
Murray hill originally got its name from the Murray farm which existed in this area in the 1700s and because the area is built on what's called a glacial ridge. The building heights are not enormous, and there is plenty of light.
Many of the brownstones are currently being used as consulates for countries while they attend the United Nations, and part of the reason for this is that the cost of maintaining these brownstones is very high, taxes are high, and maintenance is high, and especially because they're historic, certain rules must be followed.
However, the neighborhood is still primarily residential and has some very historic buildings. JP Morgan's mansion and adjacent museum are located on Madison Avenue and 36th Street. This is his original house as well as his library and editions to make the museum, and it's quite lovely. The Church of the Incarnation, which can be found on 35th street and Madison Avenue, is also located in this area. It is an episcopal church that was built in the late 1800s and houses a lot of really fine ecclesiastical art. It has a mural painted by john Lafarge, a famous muralist in the late 1800s. It also has stained glass windows by Tiffany and Company, as well as many other windows imported from England. This beautiful building has been preserved and half of it was housed by a New York Public Library. It was the business library it's currently closed and I'm not sure what they're doing with the space the other half is occupied by offices for the oxford press but it has been preserved in its original state. The units themselves, on the other hand, were all quite small, and when the development was built, it was designed to house people coming to New York in efficiency-type units these kitchens weren't kitchens at all they were efficiencies, and some of the studio apartments also came equipped with murphy beds so this was not luxury housing and to this day is still quite diminutive if you will but it was interesting because it was so innovative since Tudor City was her first home, the tradition has continued, and it is just another interesting neighborhood in New York City.
