What is HPV?

HPV or Human Papillomavirus is a common infection that spreads through intimate skin-to-skin contact. HPV is a group of more than 200 related viruses. HPV types fall into two groups: low risk and high risk. High-risk HPVs can cause several types of cancer. There are 12 high-risk HPV types: HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, and 59. Two of these, HPV 16 and HPV 18, are responsible for most HPV-related cancers. It can affect anyone regardless of gender.

About Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally. It is primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Regular screening tests such as Pap smears and HPV tests can detect precancerous changes early. Vaccination against HPV can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer.

Who should get the HPV vaccine?

CDC recommends HPV vaccination for:
All preteens (including boys and girls) at age 11 or 12 years (or can start at age 9 years).
Everyone through age 26 years, if not vaccinated already.
