Thomas O. Chisholm was born in a humble log cabin in Franklin, Kentucky, USA, in 1866. He began writing hymns in 1903, and by the time of his passing in 1960, he had penned more than 800 hymns and at least 400 poems. This hymn, together with his famous "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," are probably his his best known works. This particular hymn first appeared in print around 1905.
The tune for this work was provided by Chisholm's contemporary, George C. Stebbins (1846-1945.) The excellent tune, now in public domain, has been borrowed for other words. including "God is Faithful to His Chosen," written by Roy Taylor.
