September Discussion Topic: Voting Rights Threats and Opportunities for 2026
During the first REV UP call of 2026, we opened by sharing stories about Bob Kafka, the founder of REV UP and a long-time disability rights organizer who passed away at the end of 2025. Then, in the spirit of Bob's mantra "Don't mourn, organize," we moved into discussing what to expect for 2026. A guest presentation from Secure Democracy taught us what types of voting rights laws states may try to pass this year. We talked about laws that may make it harder to vote and laws that may make it easier to vote. Next, a panel of two grassroots disability vote organizers in Alabama shared examples of how that have organized at the state legislative level. Finally, we closed with breakout rooms to discuss strategies and challenges across states.
Guest speakers:
• Evan Preston from Secure Democracy and Voting Rights Lab
• Percy Garrett from Seeing Without Sight, National Federation of the Blind, Alabama Institute for the Deaf and the Blind
• Kathy Jones from League of Women Voters Alabama
