Today's Vinyasa Yoga flow is designed around the Niyama of Svadhyaya or Self-Study. The twist to today's session is that you have the option to cover your eyes throughout the entire practice. Have fun!
Who we think we are, comes as a result of conditioning. This conditioning comes from a variety of sources that place us into different 'boxes" where we find belonging or rejection.
"These boxes are things like how we identify ourselves, what we believe to be true, our preferences, dislikes, fears and imagination. All of these boxes are informed by country, culture, gender, town, ancestors and family history, groups we belong to and our personal experience."
Understanding the personality we have developed based on conditioning (internal or external) helps us to know how we process the world around us so that we can thrive and reflect the true divinity of awareness and love within us.
Here's a great, and in my opinion, extremely accurate*** personality test you can take to aid in understanding yourself on a deeper level.
https://www.16personalities.com/ (*** if you answer the questions as honestly as you can and not based on positive hypothetical beliefs)
Svadhyaya shows and helps us to understand our boxes, while providing the opportunity for us to choose to dwell in a space of love and acceptance. In this space we can reflect our inner divinity to the world around us.
"We can find clues about our boxes by watching our projections, by the process of tracing our reactions back to (personal) belief and by courageously looking at life as it is. This process of knowing ourselves and the boxes that adorn us, creates a pathway to freedom."
Perspective and disposition shape our experience. That is, the way we look at the world and who we are at our core, determines how we see and experience the world around us. "As you begin to steadfastly pay attention to what you are saying to yourself about the moment, the other person, yourself and life, you will get clues about the "boxes" you have wrapped yourself in that create your own little universe. All of these utterances are projections of the parts of yourself you love, don't love, can't see or can't yet accept."
What belief's are you holding on to? Are they hurting or helping you and the world around you? "Our belief system is not wrong or right, but it is constraining; when we identify with these constraints, we run on old habits and we consent to being less than we are."
"The path of growth is not a straight line; it does not look anything like what we think it should look like. In fact, often our belief system of what growth looks like, is the very thing that stops our growth. What we think we know stops our inquiry. The Buddhists remind us to have a beginner's mind; to know that we don't know. It is this stance of humility that opens the door to learning and revelation."
Meditation, journalling and open, honest conversations with those around us are amazing and extremely useful ways to help with self-study, self understanding and thus self mastery.
Be sure to take time to learn about you :)
